West Papua Art Book

About me!

My name is Michael Kruse and as an aspiring script writer I try to get as much writing experience as possible. The chance to use but also enhance my talent is what I strive to do every day.  This resulted in  a poem about West Papua, which lead to the idea of a poetry collection.

My goal is to compose a poetry collection about West Papua. Not a collection of my work, but a collection of everyone who feels the need to capture his or her feelings about West Papua on paper.

About the project!

This project supports the Free West Papua Campaign, a non-profit organization I’m involved with. The Free West Papua Campaign is committed to stop the abuse of human rights and the destruction of the beautiful flora and founa in West Papua. The people of West Papua have been suffering under Indonesian occupation since 1963. Over 500,000 civilians have been killed, and thousands more have been raped, tortured and imprisoned. Foreign media and human rights groups are banned from operating in West Papua, so people rarely hear about the situation there. The Free West Papua Campaign is bringing the story of West Papua to the world and campaigning for freedom and justice in West Papua, to end the violence of the last 50+ years.

All proceeds of the sale of this art book go to the Free West Papua Campaign. For more information on this campaign go to: https://www.freewestpapua.org.

The plan!

The plan is to collect 56 poems by 56 different writers from all parts of the world, one poem for each year of illegal occupation of West Papua. In addition, I would like to see these poems be brought to life by 56 different artists (e.g. sketch artists, painters, sculptors or illustrators) worldwide, visualizing the emotions they feel after reading one of those poems. The poems and the artwork will be printed next to each other in an A4 size art book. Each creation will be credited with name, age and country. The result will be an amazing and diverse art book, which will capture the voice of suffering in West Papua. A voice that has been silenced for 50+ years!
